The current weather in Las Vegas truly has it feeling as if it is an endless winter this year. Of course, as most locals know, the sunshine and warm weather will return soon enough. Where to go? How much to spend?

Las Vegas is well known, around the world, for being a place where anything goes. The city is open 24 hours a day to serve gamblers and other creatures of the night who are looking for some cheap fun and a good time. The question I have is - where do folks go to get some killer flowers to go with that nice jackpot? With Valentine's Day right around the corner I figured there would never be a better time to ask.

I am always a little hesitant about buying anything in person. I am the type of guy who really likes to take his time, research, and explore all of the options. In some florist shops - particularly the ones who do not put the prices on the flowers - this can sometimes be a problem. So it leaves me to wonder - where are all the great flower deals for Valentine's Day in Las Vegas (or even the state of Nevada)?

Am I better off jut going with a national chain - such as Pro Flowers - or are there any well priced, friendly, beautiful shops that have fantastic flowers in the local market?

I have been having such a difficult time finding information about the local flower scene in sin city, no wonder so many people just order online! In the year 2011 you would think we would have this all taken care of already. Any help would be appreciated!

Nevada Sagebrush

Nevada’s state flower is the hardy sagebrush. Also known as blue/black sagebrush, big sagebrush, Artemisia tridentata, or mountain sagebrush, it has a pungent odor similar to common sage. However, the plant should not be used in a similar fashion, as it is unrelated to the sage herb and can cause an allergic reaction—not to mention a bitter taste in the mouth!

Featuring yellow flowers, the sagebrush grows across the Western U.S. and Canada. It usually grows no taller than one to two meters in height. The broad, wedge-shaped leaves are covered in silvery fine hairs to keep the plant from losing too much water or overheating in the desert sun. Its flowers bloom from late summer to early fall.

Here are some fun facts about the sagebrush:

Native American tribes used sagebrush as a homeopathic medicine. Following a battle or childbirth, it was given to people with injuries to stop internal bleeding. They also used it to rid sufferers of internal parasites from their unwelcome worms. They also made a tea from the plant. This was used to treat topical wounds or taken internally for the same reasons listed above by tribes from the Mountain Western region.

Leaves from the sagebrush plant can be used for livestock feed, comparably to alfalfa; however, this should be done sparingly, particularly with cows, as they can be toxic.

Humans should avoid touching the shrub, as sagebrush is considered a highly allergenic plant. If touched, people with sensitive skin can develop dermatitis.

Young Sagebrush stems are a pretty silvery-gray color; they don’t turn the gray-brown larger plants are known for until they are much older. The oldest Sagebrush shrubs have shredded bark.

Pronghorn sheep eat sagebrush day in and day out. Some say that extinct North American herbivores such as the American Camel and Ground Sloth also ate it.

Sagebrush doesn’t tolerate fires well. When its habitat is burned down, only wind-blown seeds from outside the area will be able to restore the plant’s growth.

Sagebrush flowers, which are spread out along the tips of the shrub’s branches, contain three to five flowers per head.

People should also refrain from eating sagebrush. If consumed, it can cause internal blood clotting and problems in the digestive tract and liver. If digested, symptoms will typically go away after one to two days.

Sagebrush isn’t really related to the herb sage; instead, it is a member of the wormwood family.
